The photo was taken below a bridge, "through the tunnel" so to speak. I think there were also some kind of pipes running under the bridge. The trees on the riverbank on the other side of the bridge (across the river) are reflected in the water. The "square" effect is all in the shadows cast by the bridge. In the bottom right hand corner is the riverbank this side of the bridge.
