Is the handle at the side like the one that was used for phones that were hung on the wall? The very first phone I used in the 1940s was a candlestick model. One took the receiver off the side hook of the "candlestick" and told the operator the number you wanted to call.
Since it's a NZ phone, I can only assume you're right, Norma. I never used a candlestick phone, but they were in all the old movies and I always thought they were cool!
